Description | Concept developed by Mark Moore and Bill Fredericks of NASA Langley. Design goal is to achieve a 24 endurance, highly efficient loiter (L/D>20), while also achieving vertical takeoff at low discloading. Low discloading was desired to satisfy mission goals of operation from a sandy ground environment with low noise, at relatively low power. The unique feature of the Dos Samara is that the mono-blade rotors are driven by synchronized electric pancake hub motors with batteries in the counter balance, with these mono-rotors stopping and locking in transition flight to achieve a sailplane-like cruise. Detailed internal layout includes Satcom, avionics and payload volumes, as well as the hybrid-electric powertrain. |
